A garden flag looks like the simplest purchase in the yard. The rotation habit behind it has four specifications, and skipping any one of them is how the drawer ends up full of flags nobody swaps.

Buy the rotation, not the flag

Decide the months you will actually keep — most homes settle on eight to twelve.

Every flag must match the last: same 12×18 cut, same 1.5-inch sleeve, identical hang on the stand you already own.

Match sides to words

Lettering on a single ply reads mirrored from one direction; at 12×18 that looks like a mistake.

Worded flags want the two-ply build with a light-stop liner; pattern-only flags read fine single-ply and cost less.

Insist on print through the cloth

Dye-sublimation drives colour into the polyester rather than coating it.

That is the difference between a July flag in August and a pink one.

Spend once on the stand

Powder-coated steel, a rubber stopper, an anti-wind clip — bought once, used for every flag you ever own.

The cheap stand leans by June and takes the whole habit down with it.

Know what it is not

A garden flag is décor, not signage — it will not mark a mailbox or carry a business alone.

If the job is a sign, buy a sign; the flag is the handshake, not the address.
